About the Synoptic paper
According to OCR, for the purposes of this unit, a monologue is:
“any spoken or written text in which a sole, individual voice gives expression to his or her own immediate thoughts, ideas or feelings”
This gives you a lot of scope to read texts that you consider to be monologues according to this definition.
In the Synoptic paper, there will be two sections:
Section A: You will be given 2 unseen extracts which fit the above definition of a monologue. They will include 2 of the following 3 text types: fiction (which could include poetry), non-fiction, transcript of real speech. You will be asked to analyse how feelings and ideas are presented in these 2 texts, comparing them and also making reference to your wider reading of other monologues.
Section B:You will be given a single unseen extract, of whichever text type did not appear in section A. You will be asked to write a very short (about 150 words) creative piece based on this extract, usually looking at the same subject from an opposing point of view. You will then be asked to write a commentary on the differences between your piece and the original, a little bit like you did for your monologue coursework, but with the added element of comparison.
